ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization this is like a governing body based in Geneva, Switzerland.  They are the creators of ISO standards and their main aim is to provide guidelines and specifications for organisations to adhere to, thus ensuring businesses products, processes and procedures are fit for purpose.

22053 ISO’s have been published globally. The procedure to developing a new ISO standard is as follows:

  1. ISO standard formed to respond to a need in the market (The ISO is not decided by ISO but by a request from industry).
  2. ISO standard is created from expect opinions (ISO standards are created by a large group of experts from all over the world- they negotiate together on the scope and finer details, this is called the draft stage).
  3. ISO standard is developed through a multi stakeholder process.
  4. ISO standard is based on a consensus.
