What is the difference between ISO 14001 and ISO 45001?

A common query we are asked to clarify is the difference between ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Although these standards do have some similarities, they deal fundamentally with different environments.

So what is the difference between ISO 14001 and 45001?

ISO 14001 covers the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS), placing focus on an organisation’s impact on the external environment. The standard aims to reduce an organisation’s waste, pollution and energy consumption.

ISO 45001, on the other hand, focuses on an organisation’s internal environment. Whilst ISO 14001 requires the implementation of an EMS, ISO 45001 is based on an OHSMS (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).
The standard aims to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses and provide a framework for managing health and safety responsibilities.
